Decorate Your Home for Fall
It’s finally here! Every interior decorator, mommy blogger or photographer has been waiting for this season for months. Autumn is a beautiful time of year in so many ways. The stunning foliage on the trees, the bright orange pumpkins taking over people’s front steps, the crisp and sunny mornings… what’s not to love! Many people enjoy decorating their homes for the fall season because there are so many great decor ideas. If you are looking to decorate your home for fall, read on! Show off the Warm Colours
Reds, oranges and yellows. This is the time for all of them! Your typical fall colours are the warm ones we see in leaves, but, there are other great fall colours to utilize as well! Think earthy greens, blues and browns as well. You will also want to pair your bold colours with the neutrals, so go with something like beige, cream or taupe. All of these colours brought together will create a beautiful, cozy, autumn scene! Patterns are also nice to play with. Plaids and stripes are a great choice for this time of year. But, remember to use them sparingly. Tablecloths, pillow covers and blankets are all great places to show off the patterns!
Leaves are Your Friends
This natural decor hack can be easily attained by heading to the forest and collecting a few fallen leaves. Whether you use real or fake leaves is up to you, but the real ones can bring a crisp, fall scent along with them too! However, be sure to look for little critters who might be hanging out on the backs of them. A few great leafy decor ideas include pumpkin decoupage, autumn wreaths, leaf roses, a leaf & branch mobile, leaf trees, mason jar lanterns, leaf bowls, etc. You can even opt for something super simple such as a few leaves in a basket or some leafy branches in a vase. A few loose leaves also look great around a centrepiece, candle or on side tables.
Blankets Galore!
It’s time to break out the cozy chunky blankets! Bright oranges and yellows are great for this time of year. Blue/green plaids and stripes are also nice. The Scottish kilt pattern is quite popular with the fall designers too! These soft comfy throws can add pizazz to any room including draped over the couch, chair or bed. Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice
Pumpkins double as both autumn and Halloween decor. Though the fall pumpkins are a little less spooky, they can still be used for both. Adding pumpkins throughout your home is an easy way to add some fall flair. Pumpkin decor doesn’t have to be real squashes, you can also use fake ones! A few fun pumpkin crafts include fabric-covered pumpkins, drip painting pumpkins, canning ring pumpkins, painted wood pumpkins, enchanted book pages pumpkin, and toilet paper pumpkins (and you can reuse the TP afterwards!). The scent of pumpkin can also add a sweet fall smell to the home. Fall candles and soaps are a great way to add the scent. Or, you can bake pumpkin pie or cookies, your family will thank you!
Focus on the Entryway
The entryway is like the mouth to your home. It is the first thing people see and what speaks to your guests. This is why it is such a great idea to decorate your entryway to set the tone for the rest of your house. Benches, hooks and shelving are a great place to start. Then the decorating can begin! Try some cute fall-themed throw pillows or one of your cozy blankets draped on a bench. Pumpkins look cute when arranged in a basket paired with leaves, fall flowers, pampas grass or wheat. Don't Forget the Mantel
As with any holiday or season, it is always fun to decorate your fireplace mantel… If you have one of course! The fireplace mantel can be decorated in many different ways. Many people like to stick to a symmetrical look, normally with some tall vases on either side paired with some sort of garland draped from one side to the other. The tall items on either end don’t need to be the same either, you can pair pumpkins, gourds or apples with candlesticks or antique pitchers. Another great way to decorate it would be by putting the taller items in the middle (ie, candles, vases, lanterns) and then placing garland or leaves on either side of the tall pieces. An autumn sign, wreath or mirror above the fireplace adds a nice finishing touch!
Don't Overdo It
It can be easy to go all out with patterns and pumpkins everywhere. But try to be selective when putting decor together. You may feel like decorating every corner of your home with fall items, but remember the “less is more” rule. Places of interest include table centrepieces, entryways, front porches, kitchen islands/counters, bathroom counters, shelving, fireplace mantels, and bedrooms.
